Delivered-To: mbaya@svaha.com From: TsunamiInc@aol.com Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 14:50:00 EST Subject: The Jamie Anderson Newsletter To: DakotaAZ@aol.com CC: knowmoresecrets@att.net Hi everyone! It's time for another edition of the Jamie Anderson newsletter! You are on this list because you signed my mailing list at a concert or wrote to me and asked to be added. If you'd like to be deleted or if your address will change soon, please let us know at tsunamiinc@aol.com. Please don't forward jokes, virus warnings or petitions. (Incidentally, most virus warnings and petitions are hoaxes. Check http://urbanlegends.miningco.com/ for more info.) I love hearing from fans, though, and try to answer every email. Feel free to forward this newsletter to your friends, especially if I'm going to be performing in their area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Greetings from the frozen south! We were slammed with 15 inches of snow Monday night and because the temperature hasn't left the 30's, most of it is still on the ground. Durham's one snowplow is having trouble keeping the streets clear of ice and snow. (Okay, so there's more snowplows than that. It only SEEMS like one.) Imagine our streets as one big skating rink and Katarina Witt doesn't live here. Yeah, I know you folks in Alaska and the upper midwest are cryin' for me but believe me, this is a big deal for this area of the country. Lots of folks have been off work all week because the streets are impossible to drive on. I had a waaaaay fun concert with Deidre McCalla last Friday in Atlanta. We had a good time performing for the 160-some folks who were there. Thanks so much to all the volunteers who helped us. Deidre and I produced the concert ourselves since it's hard for both of us to get booked in Atlanta. Sad, isn't it, that an artist of Deidre's caliber can't get a booking in her home city? Deidre and I may do other concerts together, possibly in Durham. Because I'm already scheduled for two big concerts in Durham this year, we'll probably hold off until next year. In mid January, I had the pleasure of performing at the South Florida Folk Festival in Ft. Lauderdale. Those folks really know how to put on a party! They loved my funny tunes and my being an out lesbian didn't make them blink. In fact, I wasn't the only out person on stage! I did a fun round robin on stage with Dan Pelletier, Doug Spears and George Wurzbach (whose demented idea was it to put four funny songwriters on stage at once?). It's the first time I've had a real straight guy chorus for "I Wanna Be A Straight Guy" and DANG can George belch. (BTW, George is the guy who co-wrote "Much Better View of the Moon," that song I've included in my recent shows.) The festival happens every January. Check it out next year! You won't need parkas or snow boots. Thanks to the folks who came to see me at the showcase at Borders in Greensboro, NC just before the festival. Rob Seal's songwriter showcase is a must for anyone who lives in the area. And how could I forget that fabulous coffeehouse in Fuquay-Varina, NC where I played January 8? It's a cozy venue with great food and live music every weekend. Even if you live in Raleigh or Durham, it's worth the drive. I'll be back there, probably in the summer. IF the ice ever melts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DURHAM CONCERT MOVED TO FEBRUARY 26 The Durham concert, originally scheduled for this Saturday, has been moved to February 26 because of bad weather. If you know someone who was planning to go, and they aren't on my mailing list, please let them know. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MP3 Thanks to everyone who visited my new MP3 page. As of 1/20/00, my page had gotten over 600 page views, more than 600 plays and over 300 downloads. I was on the Women of MP3 page for a week mid month. Groovy, eh? The page will be up for a long time, so feel free to visit whenever you want: http://www.mp3.com/jamieanderson. If you don't have an MP3 player, you can download one from MP3 or http://www.real.com (if you download the Real Player 7, G2, it'll play lo-fi MP3 and RealAudo). Both players have a free version which is enough for those of us who don't need the bells and whistles. Thanks to Softsound for putting up the MP3 page. If any of you performers are looking for someone to put up a page for you, I highly recommend Softsound. info@softsound.org, http://www.softsound.org. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RADIO SHOW There's a radio show, "Lesbian and Gay Voices" on KPFT, 90.1 FM, in Houston on Monday nights, 8 - 10 pm central time. They're also broadcasting on the net at http://kpft.splitrock.net. (There may still be a few bugs at the website. If so, try them again - they're new at this.) They have a new segment hosted by JD Doyle that comes on at about 9:30 pm. He's an expert on lgbt music and his personal collection has everything from Ma Rainey to Romanovsky and Phillips. Oh, and Jamie Anderson. Does the guy have good taste or what? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ REVIEWS NEEDED An online magazine about NC musicians, Asazi, is going to feature me in an upcoming issue. They'd like to get short reviews from fans. If you've got some time, write to them at ehicks@asazi.com. Check out the website at www.asazi.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MICHAEL MOORE I'm a big fan of Michael Moore's. He's the guy who put out that fabulous film about working class folks and the auto industry called "Roger and Me." He's also produced other films like "Canadian Bacon" and TV shows "TV Nation" and "The Awful Truth." Moore has always been supportive of gay folks. (On "TV Nation," a segment featured a gay chorus singing outside a conservative congressman's house - I think it was Jesse Helms. Damn was it good!) "The Awful Truth", a kind of funny liberal 60 Minutes, was broadcast on Bravo last year and I think they've been renewed for a new season. Moore has an informative and entertaining website at www.michaelmoore.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SALE SALE SALE! I received a bad check at my gig in Las Cruces, NM from Lisa Hunter, a student at the university where I performed. If any of you know her, please tell her she owes Tsunami Recordings $25. Failing to make good on the check will result in a loss for my tiny company and a lot of bad karma for her. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FOLK ALLIANCE CONFERENCE IN CLEVELAND This is an industry conference for people working in folk music. I'm performing in several showcases there. If you're just a fan and not involved in folk music, it's not a very good way to hear me perform since most of my slots are short and you'd have a hard time finding the rooms where I'm performing. However, if you're attending the conference as a paid participant, I highly encourage you to visit me in the exhibit hall (I'll be at the Indiegrrl booth) or at one of my showcases. Showcase information is listed at www.dc.net/vheyman. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ INTERNET RADIO INTERVIEW There'll be an interview with me at www.gaybc.com on March 9 at 8 pm (Pacific time). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TOUR TOUR TOUR As always, check directly with the venue before heading out to any shows. 2/10 - 13, Cleveland, OH, Folk Alliance Conference 2/18 Winston-Salem, NC, 7 pm, Fiddle & Bow Society, Brew Ha Ha, 521 Baity St., open for Small Potatoes, 336-727-1038 2/26 Durham, NC, 7:30 pm, Eno River Unitarian Church on Garrett Road, with others, benefit for Triangle Hospice, 919-490-8480 3/2 Knoxville, TN, Univ. of TN, lambda@utk.edu 3/4 Walla Walla, WA, 7:30 pm, Whitman College, with Peter Mulvey and Dave Carter with Tracy Grammar, leightdc@whitman.edu 3/5 Redmond, WA, house concert, 425-883-9184, anadac@jps.net 3/8 Eugene, OR, Yama Café, 525 Willamette St., mkm11@email.msn.com 3/9 Seattle, WA and the world, 8 pm, interview on GayBC: www.gaybc.com 3/10 Tacoma, WA, 8 pm, Shakabra Java, 2618 6th Ave., 253-572-4369, tjardes@ups.edu 3/11 Olympia, WA, Traditions Café, 300 5th Ave. SW, 360-705-2819 3/12 Seattle, WA, The Four Angels, with Holly Figueroa and Stacy Board 3/13 Seattle, WA, The Tractor, 5213 Ballard Ave. NW, 206-789-3599, with other performers 3/14 Seattle, WA, Wildrose Tavern, 8 pm, 1021 E Pike St., 206-324-9210, with Holly Figueroa and Stacy Board 3/15 Portland, OR, Blarney Stone Pub 3/17 San Marcos, CA, 7:30 pm, North County Lesbian and Gay Center, 150 Valpreda Rd. #207, adylinc@juno.com http://www.outontheweb/linc/concerts/html, 3/18 Los Angeles, CA, 8 pm, The Village @ Ed Gould Plaza, Gay and Lesbian Center, 323-860-7300, 323-860-7336, www.laglc.org 3/19 Santa Cruz, CA, 7:30 pm, Kuumbwa Jazz Center, 320 Cedar St., 831-426- 7828, llp@cruzio.com, open for Cris Williamson 3/24 Berkeley, CA, 8 pm, Rose Street House of Music, rosestreetmusic@hotmail.com, 510-594-4000 3/25 San Jose, CA, 8 pm, Sisterspirit, 938 The Alameda, 408-293-9372, www.elf.net/sisterspirit, opening: Suzanne Mulcahey 3/31 Durham, NC, Duke University, Queer Music Festival 4/6 Lansing, MI (tentative) 4/7 Ft.
